PCD Tools

DSC_0206

To get an optimal economic result when using tipped tools, it’s most important to have a look at all parameters. The manufactured quality is of utmost importance.

DSC_0129

Certain Criteria are to be considered when purchasing a Polycrystalline Diamond Tool.

  1. Exactly produced tool body, high corrosion protection
  2. Shank, borehole, cone and installation surface must be fine tuned and honed
  3. Rigid packaging for transport
  4. Dimension sheet should have exact CNC data
  5. Balancing quality grade

An all-around tool does not exist. A dealer should provide expertise and give a very specific, exactly for your needs defined, offer. Only doing it this way guarantees a most economic result when using PCD tipped tools.

Clamping Systems

Clamping Systems are a decisive link between a tool and the machine spindle. Tool life and attainable work piece quality, but also safety are significantly influenced by clamping systems.

DSC_0222

Ideally the clamping system should be:

  1. of low weight
  2. of low imbalance
  3. compliant with the norm
  4. made of high quality steel

Clamping technology assumes a key position with regard to machining quality and safety technology. Considering that the purchase of clamping systems is a matter of trust, it is recommendable to rely on products of well known manufacturers and to take detailed advise from sharp tooling experts!

Diamond vs. Carbide Tooling Cost Comparison

Diamond Router Bits

It is well-known that Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) tooling delivers high performances in cutting applications while also significantly while reducing a company’s overall tooling costs.  Under the right conditions and with the proper maintenance, great cost savings can be achieved. The first tool life can yield savings of up to 30 -50% in comparison to carbide tools or inserts. And subsequent sharpenings will further increase the savings when compared to a carbide tool or insert.

To illustrate the cost savings we have created the example cost comparison below:

The Example Cost Comparison (per Linear Foot Machined):

The calculation quite accurately illustrates, that although at first look Diamond tools seem to be a costly investment, it is an investment that pays off rather quickly and costs only a fifth of what equivalent Carbide tools would cost.

It may not be necessary to buy Diamond Tools for everyone and every company, but especially those who need their tools to last as long as possible and would like to get as much use out of them as possible, will find that investing in diamond tools is more than cost-effective.  The best applications for diamond tools are those machining  abrasive materials and doing high volume of the same cut. We are now offering select tooling online.
